Podiatry

Podiatry appointments
30 minutes and over

In your first visit, the Podiatrist will take a full medical history from you. They will also take note of the current demands you place on your feet are.
The chiropodist will then assess your feet, noting vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal status, and inspect your skin and nails. From here, they will be able to form a treatment plan for you, and deal with any problems in the same session wherever possible.

Nail surgery

Nail surgery- Ingrown/ problematic nails
1 hour and over

Many nail conditions can cause significant and chronic pain. An ingrown toenail occurs when the corner or side of your toenail cuts into the flesh next to it. Chronic painful toenails can be successfully treated routinely. If complications such as infection, or repeated ingrown toenails arise, surgery may be the best long term answer. Nail surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic. The edge of your toenail may be cut away making it narrower and giving it a straight edge, or the whole nail may be removed if necessary. This is then cauterised to prevent regrowth.
Orthoses

Musculoskeletal assessments and orthoses
1 hour and over

Musculoskeletal assessments involve a complex evaluation of the feet, legs and body position both weight bearing and non-weight bearing. Your activities, past injury, sporting concerns and lifestyle will be considered. Force plate and treadmill analysis may also be used. We use this information as the basis for a rehabilitation programme or, if the problem is mechanical, an orthotic prescription.
In order to manufacture a pair of custom made orthotics it is necessary to look at your gait and lower limb function in detail to ensure that your orthotics fit your feet perfectly.
Diabetic foot

Diabetic foot
health checks
30 minutes and over

Diabetes can adversely influence two systems that service the feet - the circulatory and nervous systems. Numbness in the feet means that injuries can occur without the patient being aware of it and reduced circulation means that any injuries will take longer to heal. This can lead to increased risk of infection and tissue destruction. Regular diabetic foot health screening is the best way to avoid any issues.
Falknors needling

Falknors needling of verrucae
1 hour and over

Falknors needling is used to treat stubborn and persistent verrucae; small skin lesions (warts) usually found on the sole of the foot. Verrucae are caused by the human papilloma virus and the aim of treatment is to encourage the body to recognise the virus by auto-innoculation under local anaesthetic. Alternate treatments may be used in the first instance but if not successful a needling procedure may be recommended. Once the foot is numb the verrucae will be punctured using a sterile needle to disrupt each individual papillae in the verruca – then dressed and monitored for healing progress.
Children's foot health

Children's foot health
30 minutes and over

It's perfectly normal for children to have flat feet from the time they are born, up to about five years of age. A number of changes take place in their feet and lower limbs, however a Podiatrist can identify what is normal for their age and what is not. Be aware of your child's behaviour. Is your child inactive? Would they prefer to stay inside rather than play outdoors? Do they complain or become cranky after periods of walking? This may be because the child is in pain when they walking due to a musculoskeletal fault. If you're worried, contact our clinic in Ballyclare to request a children's assessment.
If you're experiencing chronic foot pain, contact our chiropodists. We will carry out a thorough gait analysis and provide tailored solutions, including orthotics products based on your foot pathology.
